Circular Factory

Seaweed is a beautiful, renewable raw material.

Interview with Marjanne Cuypers from BlueBlocks

In recent years, seaweed has made its appearance on the Dutch menu. In addition to sushi, the seaweed burger and seaweed chips are now also available on many supermarket shelves. But did you know that seaweed is much more than just nutritious? Marjanne Cuypers, researcher, biodesigner and founder of BlueBlocks, develops SeaWood from her workshop in BlueCity: a sustainable alternative to sheet material made from brown seaweed from the North Sea. We spoke to Marjanne in the BlueCity Lab about SeaWood and how it can contribute to the enormous construction task that awaits the Netherlands. Since January 2021, all new-build homes must comply with the requirements of the Almost Energy-Neutral Buildings (BENG) for permit applications. "And circular building materials, for example made from seaweed, play a crucial role in making construction more sustainable."
