"I joined the program with an idea that had been in the back of my mind for several years: making glitter from seaweed. I had no background in chemistry, but was very motivated to explore production processes and gain hands-on experience in the lab. After 100 days of experimenting, my idea evolved into a tangible innovation with real potential.

As the winner of the Encouragement award, I earned three extra months in the BlueCity Lab. I used that time to explore further opportunities for my biodegradable seaweed-based glitter. One of those opportunities was a potential pilot project with Het Amsterdamse Bos, testing whether my glitter could be a sustainable alternative to traditional confetti and glitter – both of which are currently banned at their events due to environmental concerns.

What stood out to me the most was the energy from the other participants. Everyone came in with the same mindset: We all want to make something happen. We have no idea if it will work, but we’re going for it. That shared drive was really inspiring.

Without this program, I never would have taken the step to work in a lab. I wouldn’t have even known where to start. Here, you get the opportunity to engage with specialized knowledge and work with tools and equipment that you just don’t have at home—or might not even know exist. I highly recommend this program, especially for people who have an idea but don’t know where to start. It’s also great for those considering a career switch to sustainable innovation or looking to immerse themselves in the field. It’s an accessible way to explore different sectors within sustainable innovation and gain hands-on experience."
