The Circular Challenge was originally aimed at transforming existing waste streams. However, we are seeing, ironically, that creating circular solutions for, or even simply recycling these waste streams is not always more sustainable. At the same time, we see that there are too few scalable, biobased materials and products hitting the market - ideally made from local crops with a proven, positive effect on soil and water quality.

.Many farmers hesitate to transition to crops that support regenerative agriculture without a clear business incentive, such as enough customers or profit. This is a sector that can use some help and encouragement, and that is why the Circular Challenge focuses on creating products made from beneficial crops, and giving farmers a sustainable business model - both financially and ecologically. Thankfully, the Dutch government is also gearing its attention towards bio-based alternatives to products such as building materials as one of the solutions to the nitrogen crisis and other climate-related problems.
